German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer believed books foster courage and resilience, as readers consider what it means to live faithfully during turbulent times. He practiced what he read throughout his life, standing up to Hitler and his Nazi stooges before and during World War II, and while imprisoned in the concentration camp where his resistance to tyranny cost Bonhoeffer his life.
In his memory and to further his work in our time, we read books that he (probably) would have liked and (definitely) help us learn what it means to understand our cultural moment, love our neighbors, speak truth to power, and live courageously through what often feels like upheaval and chaos. We gather virtually to discuss what we read once a month, and commit to one action (sometimes more) based on what we read.
